About Decision Velocity Systems
DVS was built around a simple belief: decision-making under pressure can be trained.
Decision Velocity Systems develops competitive, rep-based cognitive training for athletes. We use pattern recognition, time pressure, immediate consequences, and repeated decision-making to sharpen the abilities athletes already rely on in competition: anticipation, decision speed, decision accuracy, confidence, and execution under pressure.
Chess provides the training environment, but chess is not the product. The idea is to give decision-making the same kind of deliberate, repeatable training structure that athletes already use to develop strength, technique, and tactical execution.
DVS is built to fit alongside the development systems already in place—not replace them—and to make cognitive performance something athletes can actively train, coaches can observe, and organizations can measure.
Our Origin Story
DVS began at the intersection of two lifelong pursuits: chess and competitive sports. After decades of using chess drills to train for competition and 13 years spent teaching students to use chess as a vehicle for learning skills beyond the board, a question emerged:
What else could chess be used to train?
That question became more urgent after learning that two star players on my favorite childhood team regularly played chess together in the clubhouse. I began wondering whether something they already enjoyed could be turned into a competitive advantage that might help them win a championship.
Rather than teach athletes chess, I started building progressive, competitive drills designed specifically to train pattern recognition, anticipation, decision-making, and execution under pressure.
Early feedback from former collegiate and professional athletes confirmed that the idea addressed a real need. One former minor league player told me it was something he wished he had when he was playing. From there, the mission became clear: build a form of mental-performance training that speaks an athlete’s native language — reps.
What DVS Believes About Development
Elite athletes do not need to be taught how to think from scratch. They already possess the ability to recognize patterns, anticipate, decide, adapt, and execute. Development means creating better ways to train and sharpen those abilities deliberately.
DVS believes the most effective training is active, competitive, and repeatable. Athletes improve through reps, meaningful constraints, immediate feedback, and the opportunity to adjust and go again. Decision-making under pressure is no exception.
And training only matters if it transfers to competition. The standard is not whether an exercise is interesting or engaging. It is whether the athlete becomes better equipped to recognize what is happening, make the right decision faster, recover from mistakes, and execute when the game is on the line.
How We Operate
DVS is built to earn trust through how we work. Our operating standards are simple:
- Values first. Execution always. We tell the truth, do what we say, and always maintain our integrity.
- Never satisfied. Always evolving. We measure, learn, refine, and improve — even when something is already working.
- Ownership without excuses. We prepare thoroughly, take responsibility for the work, and address challenges directly.
- Proof over noise. Results are what matter to you, and they’re what matter to us. Period.
- We embed and operate as part of the team. We work within existing development systems and collaborate with your staff.
We Embed And Operate As Part Of The Team
DVS is not designed to arrive with a replacement philosophy or compete with the people already responsible for developing your athletes. Coaches, performance staff, and player-development leaders know the players, the sport, and your environment better than we do.
Our role is to bring a specialized training system into that environment, understand how your organization already operates, and work naturally alongside the development process already in place. We collaborate, share observations, and adjust the training so it supports the team rather than becoming another separate program competing for time and attention.
We aim to add value, earn trust, and become not just useful, but an indispensable component of your complete training environment.
Our Objective
Our objective is simple: help you win more games.
Everything DVS trains — pattern recognition, anticipation, decision speed, decision accuracy, confidence, reset, and execution under pressure — exists in service of competitive performance.
This is not “chess class for athletes,” and we are not interested in training for training’s sake. The work matters when it helps your players perform better in the moments that decide games.
Better decisions. Better execution. More opportunities to win.
Decision-making under pressure can be trained.
Better decisions create better execution. Better execution can help you win more games.
Let’s take 15 minutes to determine whether DVS is a fit for your organization.
